We take our tacos seriously around here. I’ve shared about our love of taco salads (and the delicious dressing we use on them), but our love goes beyond salad. I eat tacos bowls for breakfast fairly often, and breakfast tacos are not unheard of either. With all the taco eating going on around here, it was time to come up with my own taco seasoning mix.
Making your own taco seasoning (or any seasoning mix) is not only less expensive than buying the prepared packets available in stores, it’s also healthier. Many blends, including the organic ones, often have sugars, preservatives, and stabilizers, which aren’t necessary if you make your own. Plus, you can do fun things, like add a little cocoa powder, that give your mix a richer flavor.
When I make spice mixes, I make them in bulk so that I have enough for several meals. The mixes keep well if you store them in an air tight container (eight ounce mason jars are great), so why not put in the effort only once?
I’m a big fan of spices in general, as they are a simple cooks best friend. You can take a pound of any sort of protein or veggies, and with a few spices and ten minutes in a pan, have a flavorful main course ready to go. I first got into spices when I started following Mel Joulwan’s recipes. She is my favorite whole food recipe creator EVER, and makes amazing dishes that are Whole30 compliant, if that’s your sort of thing (about once a year, it’s mine). Her website and cookbooks (Well Fed and Well Fed 2) have taught me that cooking can be simple if you use the right spices.
Because of my ever growing love of spices, I have quite the collection. And finally, I have a way to store my spices that keeps them organized and easy to find. I found these 4.5oz spice jars on Amazon and they work perfectly for keeping spice order in a kitchen drawer. I do not recommend the chalkboard labels as they are hard to write on and they don’t weather the dishwasher very well. I’m switching mine out and using a sharpie on a small piece of masking tape, which I can easily peel off when I need to wash a spice jar.
My spice mixes are stored in the cupboard above in small mason jars. I usually have one or two that I’m really into at any given time, though I’m ALWAYS into my taco seasoning mix. Right now my favorites are homemade pizza seasoning and this adobo blend from Primal Palate, which I put on everything. It saves me when I don’t have a plan for dinner, because it goes perfectly with quick-defrosting salmon. I’d love to create the same flavor in my own mix, but I know they use top quality spices and no fillers, so I’m happy to purchase them for now.
What’s your favorite seasoning mix? I always love to add a new one to my collection!
